Vermont bicyclists, walkers, launch outreach efforts

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger kicks off the Vermont Bike Challenge and Walk/Bike Month on Tuesday on Church Street.

Dressed for rain, bikers and walkers gathered Tuesday afternoon in downtown Burlington to kick off a month of advocacy for human-powered transportation.
Walk/Bike Month is more than symbolic, Local Motion staffer Jason Van Driesche said: It’s useful, healthy and fun.

The campaign’s momentum builds quickly this week with Walk and Roll to School Day (today), a weekly social fun run and yoga for cyclists (beginning Thursday) and the First Friday Art Walk.

A full schedule of athletic, cultural and educational activities is posted on the Local Motion website: http://bit.ly/WalkBikeMonth2012.

Tuesday’s ceremony also highlighted the onset of the 2012 Vermont Bike Challenge, part of a national campaign to tally miles pedaled between May and October.

Mayor Miro Weinberger spoke briefly at the dual-purpose launch, assuring the assembly of two dozen or so activists that the city will continue to maintain, repair and improve upon infrastructure to encourage alternatives to driving.

A chorus of bicycle bells celebrated the good news.
